Scoops of success: Couple opens ice cream shop
Bubba B’s Ice Creamery is in the sweet spot for Anna and Bobby Moore. Located on Warsaw’s Main Street corridor, the ice cream shop with its brightly colored walls and eye-catching window lettering is literally steps away from the local park in the heart of downtown.
When Governor Northam announced the investment of $1.2 million in Warsaw’s revitalization, the future looked bright for Bubba B’s (named for the Moores’ grandson). The Town of Warsaw unveiled a revitalization plan to encourage growth within the downtown area. According to Anna, her husband Bobby had been mulling the idea of opening a shop for several months, but now the moment was right. The Moores knew it was time to take a big scoop of faith. Anna explains, “We were one of the first businesses to open as part of the downtown revitalization, and honestly we started not knowing how we were going to make out.”
Anna and Bobby sought the help of the University of Mary Washington SBDC - Warsaw and Director Joy Corprew to bring Bubba B’s to life. “Joy Corprew has been an invaluable resource in overcoming hurdles along the way,” Anna says. “I have worked closely with Joy. She has taken me from being a paper person to someone who can put the information into a computer.” Anna also worked with the SBDC team for assistance in tracking financials, bookkeeping, and tax issues.
Joy and the SBDC team helped the Moores apply for funding. With the team’s assistance, the Moores received a Northern Neck Planning District Commission (NNPDC) Town Business Loan of $10,000, as well as a Town of Warsaw Economic Incentive Program Grant of $7,200. Along with their equity investment of $5,000, they had $22,200 to use for the business. Bubba B’s opened its doors on July 8, 2019, offering 24 different flavors of ice cream. In addition, Bubba B’s offers hot breakfasts that include made-from-scratch sausage gravy and hot biscuits.
“I try to make it to a workshop with Joy and Bonnie whenever I can,” adds Anna. Being a part of the continued growth of Warsaw will always be what makes Bubba B’s Ice Creamery special. “I look forward to continue building into this business and being a part of what’s taking place in this community,” Anna says. “That’s what we are here to do.”
