George Mason University and the Virginia SBDC are teaming up with DC I-Corps, GWU, the SBA’s Small Business Outreach Centers and others to offer a free three-part series introducing the lean startup framework to veterans business owners. Lean startup is the state-of-the-art method used by top business startups to better understand their customers and perfect their business models. It’s the same process they use in Silicon Valley. Part of Governor McAuliffe’s Virginia Velocity business plan competition which launched last year, the Virginia Velocity Tour will travel by bus to five regions across Virginia from September 10 to 23. At each stop, there will be a day of events to celebrate the region’s startup ecosystem, culminating in a public pitch competition with a $25,000 equity-free grant prize. Global Situation Room’s Brett Bruen will conduct an intensive half-day seminar offering sophisticated strategies for assessing and responding to global risk and crises. Companies will learn how to build a Counter-Crisis Management (CCM) program to reframe, not just respond to emerging issues. CCM helps businesses to identify their vulnerabilities early and develop reputational countermeasures that can be immediately deployed in the event of an incident. The seminar shows how to go beyond crisis plans and procedures into the creation of programs that will change the course of crises. These trainings with the White House’s former Director of Global Engagement offer a unique opportunity to gain a comparative advantage in increasingly uncertain times and an intensely competitive global marketplace.
The U.S. Small Business Administration is now accepting nominations for its 2016 National and District Small Business Week Awards. Let’s show our support and appreciation of our local small business community. This year the Richmond District Office will recognize both the Small Business Person of the Year and the Exporter of the Year.
National and District nominations can be submitted to SBA’s Richmond District Office at 400 N 8th Street, Suite 1150 Richmond, VA 23219, or through SBA’s online nomination portal. Guidelines and criteria can also be found on the nomination portal. All nominations must be submitted by Monday, Jan. 11, 2016.

The honor came with $10,000, the Tech Cocktail Chalice, American Airlines Business Extra points, $5,000 in Amazon Web Services credits, as well as national exposure for their game-changing technology, "Wireless Condition-Based Monitoring Powered by Energy Harvesting." HIS Energy's Semper Cell, which powers sensors by harvesting energy from its environment, promises to become the device to power the Internet of Things.
"We are very proud to have had the Hubbards and their team participate in our Innovation Commercialization Assistance Program (ICAP), which assisted HIS Energy during the development of this breakthrough technology," declared Jody Keenan, State Director of the Virginia SBDC Network. The U.S. Small Business Administration Richmond District Office’s online portal is open and ready to accept nominations for the 2015 Small Business Person of the Year.
“This year we have reduced the number of awards to only Small Business Person of the Year,” said SBA’s Richmond District Director Carl Knoblock. “This award has shown in the past the biggest return on investment to the business.”
Small Business Person of the Year is a highly competitive award that recognizes a successful small business. Criteria are based on staying power, growth, financial performance, innovativeness, response to adversity, and community involvement. Any individual or organization dedicated to the support of the small business community may nominate a business for this award. Submission guidelines and additional information and can be downloaded on the dedicated web portal at http://awards.sba.gov.
In addition to the district award, business may be nominated including self-nominations to compete in National SBA Awards recognized during National Small Business Week. The categories of awards include the following:
- Phoenix Awards (recognizing outstanding accomplishments during disaster recovery)
- Small Business Prime Contractor of the Year
- Small Business Subcontractor of the Year
- The Dwight D. Eisenhower Award for Excellence (recognizes large prime contractors who have used small businesses as suppliers and contractors)
- SBA 8(a) Graduate of the Year (for recent graduates of the SBA’s 8(a) Business Development Program)
- Exporter of the Year
- Small Business Development Center (SBDC)Excellence and Innovation Award (nominations of SBA-funded SBDC Service Centers)
- Women’s Business Center (WBCs) of Excellence Award (nominations of SBA-funded WBCs)
- Veterans Business Outreach Center Excellence in Service Award (nominations of SBA-funded Veterans Business Outreach Centers)
- Small Business Investment Company of the Year
