2012 Susan Hutson and Liz Fulcher, Charlie’s Jewelry, Newport News

Susan Hutson and Liz Fulcher approached the Hampton SBDC after the death of the owner of Charlie’s Jewelry. They had worked with him through the years and wanted to keep Charlie’s legacy alive by reopening the store.

“At the beginning the challenges and obstacles were overwhelming. We did not even know what a business plan was until we met Debra Farley who works for the SBDC. Through many classes and one-on-one counseling, we learned the vital steps to owning and running our own business. Debra Farley’s passion for people and life has been an inspiration to us.

“After a year and a half of hard work we re-opened Charlie’s Jewelry. We are currently involved in a monthly Cohort meeting that Debra Farley started to help some of her small business owners. Debra Farley and the SBDC have been and will continue to be a source of knowledge to each of us. We strongly recommend their services.”

Susan Hutson and Liz Fulcher report that they created three jobs and generated ample sales revenue between June and December, 2012, their first year in business.
